VP-21: Tooltip for Volume inconsistent with all other buttons

Description

The tooltip for the Volume slider is not consistent with the other buttons. All other button tooltips are adjectives whereas the volume tooltip is a verb.

i.e. "Captions", "Transcripts" vs. "Mute"

  The tooltip for the button in the volume controls is consistent with the play button: the tooltip describes what will happen when you click the button. The play button toggles between "play" and "pause"; the volume control button toggles between "mute" and "un-mute." I imagine that eventually, the fullscreen button tooltip will toggle between "fullscreen" and "exist from fullscreen."

  It's true that the captions and transcripts buttons are different. Not sure how to handle this one...

  Because the volume opens in a menu that appears similar to the captions and transcript one, Jon and I felt that the label should be a noun like them. It could become a bit confusing with 'mute/un-mute' label because that's not the function of the volume slider menu. The function of the button to mute and un-mute is more of a hidden interaction.

  I think if we made all tooltips verbs, it help this situation:

  • Play / Pause
  • Mute / Unmute
  • Change Captions
  • Show Transcripts

  It's a bit tricky because those menus might not be used just to show caption/transcript, there's other options there. Similar to the volume menu, it's not just used to mute/un-mute, the user can also increase/decrease the volume. In contrast, the play/pause, fullscreen/exit fullscreen buttons only have one possible action.
